Theatre Art Galleries is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Doris P. Deal Fellowship for Emerging Visual Artists.
An emerging artists is an individual in his or her formative years as a professional artists, who is attempting to launch a career and has completed basic training in the visual arts
The Doris P. Deal (DPD) Fellowship is designed to recognize and provide financial support for committed, gifted artists in their formative years, enabling them to advance and develop creatively.
The grant provides financial support to a developing professional artist by funding a specific project which is pivotal to the advancement of the artist's career.
Prospective emerging artists need not earn their living exclusively through their art, but should be able to demonstrate a commitment to doing so when and if it becomes practical The grant will culminate with an exhibition of the selected artist's work at Theatre Art Galleries.

Eligibility
Artists of all visual art disciplines may apply for the DPD grant :
Applicants must currently reside in North Carolina and must have maintained residency for at least one year.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and may not apply while enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs.
Recipient must be able to honor a commitment for an exhibition at TAG.
Recipient will potentially participate in an educational activity with TAG. (To be discussed and agreed upon by both parties.)
Recipient must file a report on the use of the grant funds at the conclusion of the grant period.
Recipient must schedule a studio visit mid-way into the grant period.
Fundable Projects
The DPD Fellowship Committee is interested in assisting the development of a visual artist's career - specifically resulting in the creation of a body of work for exhibition at TAG. For this reason, the committee expects to receive project proposals that reflect this goal. Expenditures toward this goal, except those for academic degree, are allowable.
Typical grant awards might include funds for expenses in the following areas:
Exhibition preparation expenses.
Funding for experiences to inspire a new body or work.
Purchase of supplies for creating a body of work or exhibit, etc.
The grant award will not exceed $2,000.
Evaluation Criteria
The DPD Fellowship will be awarded to an individual artist based on quality of work and evidence of commitment to a career as an artist. In order of priority, the evaluation criteria are:
Artistic excellence and creativity.
Importance of the grant to the artist's career.
Importance of grant to production of artwork for exhibition.
Applicant's demonstrated commitment to a career as an artist.
Artist clearly meets project goals.
Application Procedure
Six copies of the application materials (form, resume, statement) and one set of supporting materials must be delivered to:

Deadline is Friday, November 13, 2009
A panel of professional artists and a selected committed will review applications. Award will be announced December 18, 2009.
Late or incomplete application packages will not be considered for funding.
Application Checklist
Submit six copies of the application materials and one set of supporting materials. Collate all copies into complete sets, but not in binders or folders. Make single-side copies only.
Assemble items in the following order:

Completed application form
Resume
Artist's statement or narrative about proposed project.
One set of supporting materials:
Three letters of recommendation written within the last year.
Detailed budget proposal showing how the requested grant will be used.
Slides* of artwork submitted in clear plastic slide sheets of CD of images with separate description sheet.
Certification of residency, copy of driver's license or other document to demonstrate one year residency.
10-15 images of work that has been competed within the past three years. Slides should be properly labeled with name, title, medium, size and year. CD should identify images with title.
For slides to be returned, include a self-addressed and adequately stamped envelope. Appropriate care will be taken of your materials. TAG will not be responsible for possible damage or loss.
